Each Week we will choose a different Hawks player as "Hawk of the Week" based on their prior weeks performance. This could be a good deed on or off the ice, a solid performance on ice or great leadership. It will be a different winner each week. (No repeat winners)
We will announce the winner every Monday.
Week 1 - October 23rd to 29th
Our first Hawk of the Week winner is Oliver Grinnell-Brown. He is a goalie for U13B and has been coming to all the U11C Wolves practices to help our first-year goalie. Oliver is always positive, a good team mate, and is always willing to work hard and improve. Congrats Oliver and keep up the great work!
Week 2 - October 30th to November 5th
Week 2 Hawk of the Week goes to U13AA player, Vincent Brown. Vincent scored 2 goals and an assist in a big 4-0 win against previously unbeaten Dartmouth on Saturday and then followed it up with some volunteer work on the ice with the Hawks U9 program on Sunday morning. Vincent also added 2 assists in a 2-2 tie against Sackville to start the week. Great job Vincent!
Week 3 - November 6th to November 12th
Week 3 Hawk of the week award, goes to U15A player Jacob Galliott. Jacob scored 2 goals and an assist in a 5-0 win last week vs Cole Harbour. The U15A team went 2-0 last week and have a record of 6-1-1 which puts them 1pt behind first place TASA. Well done Jacob and keep it going U15A Hawks!
Week 4 - November 13th to 19th
Week 4 Hawk of the week award goes to U13AAA forward, Felix MacDonald. Felix was a force in the Hawks two road wins this weekend, scoring 7 goals. Off the ice Felix was a shining example of how to behave representing the Hawks. Thanking all the staff at the hotels and restaurants, being respectful of his teammates and coaches, and always looking out for the team rules. With the 2 wins, the Hawks U13AAA team move into 3rd place in the NS League. Well done and keep it going!
Week 5 - November 20th to 26th
Week 5 Hawk of the week is U15B Black Goalie, Cason McSweeney. Cason is a dedicated Jr Coach to the u13c ice hawks. He comes to all their games and practices unless there's a conflict with his own team. He preps the kids by taping sticks, helping them with equipment, making sure water bottles, sticks and pucks get to the bench for warm up. He helps the coaching staff by taking notes during the game. Cason joins the team pre & post game to celebrate and encourage the players.
Cason has a great attitude when showing up for his own team events like practice, dryland and games. He’s gotten multiple shutouts this season and has a GAA of 1.00 this year. The U15B Blacks are off to a great start this year in league play with a record of 4-2-4. Well done Cason, and keep up the great work!
Week 6 - November 27th to Dec 3rd
Week 6 Hawk of the week is Eamon Carrigan of the U15C Red Hawks. Eamon is in his 2nd year playing Hockey, and concurrently plays volleyball and floorball, and is giving back to the community as a Halifax Recreation Swim Instructor. The team went 2-0-1 and Henry chipped in with seven points, including a four-goal outburst Friday in a 6-2 vs Bedford White. Henry continues to develop as a hockey player and more importantly, continues to work on his leadership on and off the ice. He is a great teammate and an easy player to coach.

Week 10 - Dec 25th to 31st
Week 10 Hawk of the week is Addie Keys. Addie is the kind of player that every coach wants in their teams. Gives 100% in practice and games, highly coachable and brings a positive attitude and smile to the rink every time.
Over the past 4 days, Addie had wins in both of her games in the U11 AA Tom Saunders Memorial tournament helping her Halifax Black Hawks reach the semifinals. At the same time she also filled in between the pipes for the U13C Halifax Ice Hawks grabbing wins in all 5 of her starts in the Noah Llewellyn tournament. Addie helped her new teammates advance to the gold medal game and posted a shutout in their 3-0 win to take home the banner! Well done Addie! Keep up the great work!
Week 11 - Jan 1st to 7th
Week 11 Hawk of the Week is Wyatt Ravlo. Wyatt has been a leader on U11AA Red since tryouts this past Fall. His on-ice work ethic and dressing room presence are a great example to all children. He is a huge reason why his team sits atop the U11 standings.
Red started 2024 with three games this week, all being against very tough opponents with a lot on the line for our team standings. As always, Wyatt came to play and he played exceptionally well. He posted a 2-1-0 record, but with an amazing 1.00 GAA, only allowing one goal each game. Some of his saves would be worthy of TSN Highlight of the Night! With two regular season games to go, Wyatt is focused on finishing the job and earning first place.
Wyatt is a true Hawk, working hard in practices and games, but can also be found around the arena loudly supporting the other Hawks teams. He is a great teammate and a pleasure to coach.
Week 12 - Jan 8th to 14th
Week 12 Hawk of the week is Rowan MacDougall. Over the past week, Rowan has been instrumental in the team's 3 straight wins with 3 straight hat tricks! If you go back further, he's recorded 4 hat tricks in the last 5 games. The great thing about Rowan though is that he is as much of a playmaker as he is a goal scorer.
Its not the just the goals that makes Rowan worthy of this nomination. Rowan has been demonstrating all the leadership qualities and behaviours one can expect of a player this age. He sets a great example for the rest of the team with his worth ethic, behaviour and attitude, and commitment to the "team game" - both on and of the ice and practice and games.
It such a pleasure for coaches to see these qualities in such a young player and witness how someone his age can truly make the players around him better. Congrats Rowan and keep up the great work!!
Week 13 - Jan 15th to 21st
Hawk of the week for week 13 is Matteo Mercer. Matteo has also been a leader on the U15 B Black team. He was recently voted as one of the team leaders this year, our only first year player who was named as an assistant captain. He actively leads by example in the dressing room, off ice at dryland training and when helping the younger kids. He is eager to learn and highly coachable. His energy is infectious and he has been called up to the U15 A team on multiple occasions, even travelling to Cape Breton with them to win a silver medal in a tournament there. This first year U15 Hawk has bought into the Hawks family in every way.
From our U7 Director: The U7 Hawks had the pleasure of meeting Matteo Mercer this past weekend as part of the First Assist Program. Matteo's passion for hockey was on display as he supported our U7 Hawks develop their skills and ensured the kids grew their love for the game. Matteo's leadership shone with every c-cut, pivot and stop. Best of luck in the rest of your season Matteo
Week 14 - Jan 22nd to 28th
Week 14 Hawk of the Week is U9 player Zachary Carmichael. Zach has been helping his U9 Intermediate Red team at both ends of the ice, splitting his time between playing skater and goalie. Along with making saves and scoring goals, he has shown a commitment to defensive play, and his work ethic in the defensive end is an example for his teammates. Zach has attended the Hawks' Wednesday goalie sessions, as well as power skating, and continues to get better each week. Keep it going Zach!
Week 15 - Jan 29th to Feb 4th
Pierre Asselin is an assistant captain and defensemen with the U13C BlackHawks. Pierre has overcome significant health challenges in the first part of the season only to return to play with energy and enthusiasm. Even when he was sick, he never missed watching his team play on Facebook or from the stands. Pierre is a positive role model, team player and inspiration to us all! He is an extremely brave young man and nothing can stop him from playing the game he loves! Pierre is deserving of the honour of being named Hawk of the Week!
Week 16 - Feb 5th to 11th
Week 16 Hawk of the week is Ethan Peddle from the U15AA Hawks. Ethan was nominated for his hard work and dedication to the U15AA team but also the support he shows to the U15A team on a weekly basis by coming out and supporting other Hawks teams. Well done Ethan!
Week 18 - Feb 19th to the 25th
We have 2 nominations this week, both from U11AA
From U11 AA Black, Mikko Verville: Mikko's nomination is not as much about this past week alone, but one of a story of how hard work, determination and a positive attitude pays off when applied consistently over the course of a hockey season! Mikko shows up every Monday for the team's optional 6am power skating, he never misses a practice, and is always eager to learn and is highly coachable. With his extraordinary development over the course of this year, it will be exciting to see him make his mark at this U11 level next year! Great work Mikko, you are a shining example of why coaches coach!
From U11 AA Red, William Briggs: William has been a leader on Halifax Hawks U11AA Red all season and has stepped his game up a notch as we continue to compete in the Provincial Qualifiers. Our team entered the weekend with a 3-1 record, but two very important games to close out our qualifiers. In a 4-0 Saturday victory over Chebucto, William scored on his second shift of the game, but was just getting started. He added his second goal of the game in the 2nd period and scored a pair in the 3rd period, meaning he scored all four goals in the huge win!!! William’s hot streak continued with an important power play goal Sunday in our team’s Sunday 5-1 win vs TASA. William scored five of our team’s nine goals this weekend and he helped his team to two wins securing the #1 seed in Provincial Qualifiers for Pool B.
William is a great teammate on and off the ice and the coaches hope his stick remains hot as the team progresses deeper into the playoffs.
Congrats William and Mikko!
Week 19 - Feb 26th to March 3rd
Halifax 11AA Red has continued its successful playoff run, earning a game in the CMHL provincial qualifying finals with a 3-0 win Saturday over TASA. Bayly Johnston has been a huge part of these playoffs and entire season. All year, Bayly has been given the task of shutting down the other team’s top forward unit and Saturday was no different. He logged important minutes and kept TASA bodies in front of him and to the outside. His defensive responsibilities don’t stop him from contributing on the scoresheet either and Bayly added a powerplay assist on the game winning goal. For U11AA Red to have a chance at moving on through the playoffs they will rely heavily on Bayly on both ends of the ice.
Bayly is a hardworking player in practices and games, is a great teammate, and obviously loves his teammates and game of hockey.
Week 20 - March 4th to 10th
Week 20 winner is Drew Pettipas. Drew is a leader on his team and shows up to play hard every game. In his division Drew leads all U11C players in points. He has also had the opportunity to be called up to the U11B and U11A teams where he has also added to their offence by scoring goals for both teams. Drew always shows up to the rink with a smile on his face and ready to have fun with his teammates. Congrats Drew!
Week 21 - March 11th to 17th
Week 21 winner is Oscar Johnson. Last year Oscar played in U9 Developing, this year he is one of the most rounded and skilled players in U9 Advancing. Oscar's success is a result of his work ethic. He works hard on improving his skills at practice, at home and during games. Oscar is a great teammate to all the kids and coaches on his team and always gives 100% when he is on the ice. Congrats Oscar!
Week 22 - March 18th to March 24th
Week 22 Hawk of the week is Yushin Kim. Yushin Kim is a forward for the U13C BlackHawks and recent MVP in the Birthplace of Hockey Tournament! Yushin is new to hockey this year and has embraced the sport with energy and enthusiasm. He always has a smile on his face and is ready for anything. He works hard and it shows. He battles for the puck like no one else, never gives up and is always on the move. Yushin is always positive with his teammates and sportsmanlike on and off the ice.
Yushin’s dedication and love of the game shows everytime he is on the ice. He is very deserving of Hawk of the Week!
Final Week of Nominees for Hawk of the week. With this being the last week, we are going to recognize all the nominees for the final week below. Thank you to everyone who took the time this yr to say such great things about our players! See you next year:
As we wrap up the season, the coaching staff wanted to put forward our U11A goalie Jimmy DesBarres name for consideration of "Hawk of the Week".Jimmy has had an exceptional year, backstopping our young team from what could have been landslide victories from our opponents. Jimmy was dedicated to attending our early morning Sunday practices, and also stepped up to help out with the UllAA Red Hawks as a second goalie during many of their practices. Jimmy is a quiet, very focused, and extremely coachable member of our team for whom all his teammates appreciate!
From our CMHF U11AA Black Champions, Matsyn MacPhee. It is fitting that Matsyn be recognized at the end of the season with this nomination as his development path has been a steady incline from the start of the season until now. In the early months of the season, Matsyn tried both forward and defence before eventually settling on the backend. Matsyn has been very committed to his own development as demonstrated by his participation in the U11 AA Black Breakfast Club 6AM skates on Mondays and also being on track to complete his team's 10,000 shot challenge by the end of March.
His increased strength on the puck, in the corners, and holding the blueline have been the largest indicators of his development this season. Matsyn is developing into a very reliable and responsible defenceman - just what every coach wants! Great job Matsyn and keep up the hard work!
From U11AA Red, Alex Dougan is one of the best shutdown defencemen in U11AA this year, but he’s also starting to find his groove offensively as the season progresses. In a thrilling 2-1 double overtime win this weekend vs Bedford White, Alex played a lot of important minutes, helping kill four minor penalties, but also adding the game’s first goal with a beautiful point shot that found the top corner.
Alex shows up to the rink everyday (often in shorts and Winter boots!!!) with a huge smile and great attitude. He is a hard worker, a great teammate, and a pleasure to coach.
From U15B Black: Matteo Mercer, Anthony Chalhoub, Noah Orlik, Ian Fredericks, Cason McSweeney, Brandon Williamson, Elliot Mulak
Since Oct these 7 players from u15b black have been mentoring and jr coaching the u13c ice hawks. They also help with the other two teams during our shared practices. They set up and help with drills. They are early and help tape sticks etc if needed. They come cheer on our team when their schedule allows it, and have only missed practices due to scheduling. They tune in online to watch the team, and follow their stats.
Very proud of these young gentleman who have been setting such a great example for the next age group!
